MEASURING UP

fear factor -- episode 3

The Capitol Conference Tournament began January 24th, 1992 with Wahoo and Raymond Central the number one and two seeds. Raymond Central advanced to the title game with wins over Ashland and Valley. Wahoo defeated Conestoga and then Bennington, so on Saturday night, February 1, 1992, the two teams met at Ashland HIgh School for a third time. This time the Raymond Central coach decided to take a “more aggressive” approach with their nemesis and get out and run with the ball rather than trying to be patient as they had in the first two contests. Early on, it appeared to be working as they stayed with the Warriors in a high scoring first quarter, trailing only 17 - 18. But then Joel Weyand and Mike Hancock took over for Wahoo to put some distance between them and the Mustangs. Between the latter part of the first and the early second quarter, Weyand scored 19 straight points. Then Hancock rattled off 11 points, including three three pointers. Wahoo left the court at the half up 44 - 30. With Hancock nailing three more trifectas in the second half, Wahoo once again prevailed over the Mustangs, winning their fourth consecutive Capitol Conference Tournament Championship, 78 - 61. Coach Rasmussen’s final comment: “Three of our five losses are to Wahoo. I think that we have played them enough this year.”

If the 1992 Warriors were going to be judged by how well they responded to a challenge from a good team that was a traditional rival, their efforts compared favorably to the four teams that had preceded them. It’s often said that it is difficult to beat a team three times and the Warriors had done that with Raymond Central. Coach Anderson observed, “There are some teams that you don’t mind playing three times, but Raymond Central is not one of them. They have an outstanding club and playing them three times is not something you look forward to.”
