3/9/2017 At Devaney, State First Round
Wahoo 84
Gothenburg 47
Wahoo jumped on Gothenburg early to claim a first round victory in the first round of the C1 State Tournament and finished with a 84 - 47 victory. The Warrior 1-3-1 defense confounded the Westerners as they made just 5 of 25 fieldgoals in the first half and committed 22 turnovers on the game. Wahoo led 22 - 6 after one period and pushed the lead to 40 - 14 at half.
Brendan Lacey led Wahoo with 22 points, including five three's while Jake Ruzicka (19) and Dylan Egr (10) also reached double figures. Ruzicka and Egr also led the team with 4 steals apiece. Cameron Quick pulled down 10 rebounds in leading the Warriors to a 51 - 36 advantage on the boards.
The Warrior defense held Gothenburg's leading scorer, Dawson Graham (19 ppg) to 12 points, only two in the first half. Coach Scheef commented "Graham is a tremendous player and we did a good job of not giving him any freebies."
The victory was a mild upset as Wahoo was seeded #5 to Gothenburg's #4. Wahoo will now face the #1 seed, Winnebago in the semi-finals.
