Wahoo 48
Crete 40
The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Crete Cardinals 48-40 on Saturday afternoon in Crete. Wahoo jumped out to a 12-6 lead after one quarter behind 8 first quarter points from Jon Abbott. Max Cook caught fire from 3 point range in the second quarter. The Senior hit four treys as Wahoo built a 24-9 halftime lead.
A basket from Ben Scheef and two free throws from Max Cook pushed the Warrior lead to 28-9 early in the third quarter. From that point on, the game would become a struggle for the Warriors. Crete cut the 19 point lead down to 14 at 35-21 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, Crete went on a 9-2 run to cut the Warrior lead to 7 at 37-30 with 6 minutes left in the game. A Ben Scheef free throw and 6 free throws from Max Cook pushed the lead back to 12 at 44-32. Crete would get no closer than 8 the rest of the way, as the Warriors went on to the 48-40 win.
Coach Scheef: “I thought we played a very good first half. When you hold a team to 9 first half points, you have to feel good about that. Jon got us started off well offensively in the first quarter, and Max had a huge second quarter. The second half, however, we struggled. We turned the ball over way too much. Free throw shooting has been a strength for us all year, but we really shot poorly from the free throw line tonight, and instead of being able to coast to the win, the game got much tighter than it needed to in the fourth quarter."
Max Cook led the Warriors with 24 points and 4 steals. Jon Abbott added 10 points. Tyler Kavan had 4 steals, and Ben Scheef had 7 rebounds.
Wahoo improves to 11-0, and will travel to Valley to take on D.C. West on Saturday. |
