vs. East Butler -- Holiday Tournament

12/29/08 At Wahoo
Wahoo 64 First Round of Holiday Tournament
East Butler 55

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the East Butler Tigers 64-55 in the first round of the Holiday Tournament at Wahoo. Senior Taylor Murren was 12-13 from the floor, including 5-6 from the behind the arc, and finished with a game high 35 points to lead the Warriors.

Wahoo led 17-14 after one quarter. East Butler took a 6 point lead in the second quarter at 27-21 after a Vincent Aerts basket. Wahoo responded with a 16-4 to take a 37-31 lead with a minute left in the half, before the Tigers scored the last two buckets to cut the lead to 37-35 at halftime.

Wahoo led 46-41 with three minutes to go in the period, when Murren's 4 point play started a 10-0 run. After the 4 point play, Murren scored two more baskets, and Jared Moline finished the run with a lay up, early in the fourth quarter to put Wahoo up 56-41. Wahoo then had a long dry spell. Turnovers on 8 of their next 11 possessions, allowed East Butler to cut the lead to 56-51 with 3:40 left. A Murren steal and lay up pushed the lead back to 58-51. Four more free throws from Murren, and two from Tyler Brunsting accounted for the final 9 point victory at 64-55.

"We really needed this win. I thought we played a very good third quarter, but we got very tentative in the fourth quarter and really made some poor decisions. Hopefully, we will handle a lead better the next time. However, when East Butler cut the lead to 5, we didn't fold, we made some plays and knocked down some free throws to get the win. I was pleased with our man to man defense in the third quarter. I thought Taylor Murren was outstanding tonight. His shot selection was very good, and he knocked them all down but one. When you score 35 points on just 13 shots from the field, that is terrific." Said Coach Kevin Scheef.

In addition to Murren's 35 points, the Senior also added 6 steals and 4 assists. Layne Moore added 7 points and 4 assists, and Jared Moline had 8 points and 4 boards.

East Butler outrebounded the Warriors 34-17. Wahoo shot 57.1% from the field compared to the Tigers' 39.2%

Wahoo improves to 2-3, and will face Bishop Neumann in the Finals of the tournament tonight.
