Wahoo 51 Finals of Holiday Tournament
Bishop Neumann 63
The Wahoo Warriors were defeated in the finals of the Holiday Tournament by Bishop Neumann 63-51.
Neumann led 20-14 after one quarter. The Cavaliers maintained a six point lead at 27-21 with 4:00 left in the second quarter, but Wahoo failed to score on their final 11 possessions of the second quarter. Neumann increased their lead to 34-21 at halftime.
The Cavaliers increased their lead to 43-27 three minutes into the second half. The Warriors then caught life. A Tyler Brunsting trey, followed by a Taylor Murren trey and a Jared Moline basket cut the lead to 43-35. Travis Ahrens scored on two free throws, and then Brunsting followed with a basket, Greg Milliken had two free throws, and Murren had another trey to cut the lead to three at 45-42. Following a Cavalier miss, the Warriors had a chance to cut further into the lead, but were unable to do so. A Bret Pospisil bucket made it 47-42 after three quarters.
Wahoo was not able to cut into the lead in the fourth quarter, and Neumann went on to the 63-51 win.
"I thought we competed very hard in the second half, and showed a lot of heart. The last three minutes of the second quarter, and the first three minutes of the third quarter were big. We just got ourselves too big of hole to climb out of." Said Coach Kevin Scheef.
Wahoo's leading scorer, Taylor Murren, who came into the game averaging 29 points a game, was double teamed for much of the game, and was held to 11 points.
"Give a lot of credit to Coach Weiss for his game plan and ability to take away Taylor Murren for us. Brandon Chapek was a big mismatch for us physically, and he was really dominant on both ends of the floor. I thought that Tyler Brunsting played a great game for us. He gave a great effort and played with a lot of heart." Added Coach Scheef.
Brandon Chapek led Neumann with 19 points. Brunsting scored a career high 15 points and had a career high 15 rebounds.
Neumann outrebounded Wahoo by 8, 38-30, and attempted 30 more free throws, 39-9, than the Warriors did.
Wahoo dropped to 2-4, and will next host Fort Calhoun on Tuesday night in a make up game. Neumann improves to 5-1.
