vs. Grand Island Central Catholic

2/7/09 At Wahoo
Wahoo 53
GICC 67

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Grand Island Central Catholic Crusaders 67-53 on Saturday night.

The Crusaders jumped out to an 11-1 lead three minutes into the game. Behind two treys and a bucket from Matt Myers, the Warriors closed the lead to 14-11 after one quarter.

GICC led 25-20 midway through the quarter. Two free throws from Layne Moore and a three point play from Taylor Murren tied up the game at 25. GICC took a 32-26 lead into the halftime.

The Crusaders built a 10 point lead with 3 minutest to go in the third quarter at 41-31. Two free throws from Murren, a Jared Moline trey, a Murren bucket, and two free throws from Tyler Brunsting cut the Crusader lead to 41-40 with 30 seconds left in the quarter. A three point play with 1.6 seconds left in the quarter by Brandon Meyer put GICC up 44-40 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Crusaders built the lead back to ten at 51-41. A Matt Myers bucket cut the lead to 53-47 with three minutes to go, but a Seth Wardyn trey pushed the lead back to 9 at 56-47. The Crusaders would knock down free throws the rest of the way to preserve the 67-53 win.

GICC hit 11-19 from behind the arc, and were 16-21 from the free throw line.

"GICC really shot the ball well from the 3 point line. It seemed like every time that we climbed back in the game, they would knock down a trey to extend their lead. They are an excellent shooting team." Said Coach Kevin Scheef.

Taylor Murren led the Warriors with 20 points. Matt Myers added 14 points on 3-4 shooting from behind the arc. Tyler Brunsting added 8 points. Layne Moore contributed 8 rebounds.

Wahoo falls to 9-8, and will face Ashland-Greenwood on Saturday. GICC improves to 15-2.
