Beatrice: 12 ... 15 ... 11 ... 3 .... 41
After battling #8 ranked Crete on Thursday night to earn a close fought 61 – 52 win, a slight let-down for Wahoo might have been expected on Saturday when 3 – 14 Beatrice visited. But that was far from the case. The Warriors clamped down on defense and registered a 79 – 41 win. Wahoo forced Beatrice into 17 turnovers, recording 13 steals (, many turned into easy layups – four times in the third quarter. Leading 41 – 27 at half, a Cody Hesser steal, a pass ahead to Dylan Simons, and a pass to Jase Kaminsky for the layup completed a 6- 0 run to start the period. At the 5:15 mark Simons stole the ball and dunked it home to push the lead to 50-30. With 1:29 to go in the third, Hesser converted a steal into a layup for a 60-36 lead. Kaden Christen finished off the quarter with a steal and layup to give the Warriors a 65-38 lead.
The Warriors didn’t let up in the final stanza as they held Beatrice to only three points – the Orangemen didn’t score until there was 2:03 to go. A traditional three-point play by Ethan Raabe pushed the lead to 79-38 and made it the fifth game in the last seven that went to a running clock.
The combination of the forced turnovers and a 25 – 16 rebound advantage (8 – 4 offensive) gave Wahoo 19 more field goal attempts (51 -32). Wahoo made it even more difficult for the Orangemen as the Warriors shot 65% from the field, connecting on 8 / 16 three-pointers.
The Warriors gave notice early on that they were not treating Beatrice lightly. With under two minutes to go in the first quarter, Hesser scored to put Wahoo ahead 19 – 7. Beatrice’s leading scorer, Harrison Vetrosky scored the next five points, but Eli Shada powered inside for two as the clock ran out to give Wahoo its 21 – 12 lead. Wahoo opened the second period with six straight points and a Kaden Christen three at the 5:11 mark completed a 15-4 Wahoo run. Another Christen three gave the Warriors their biggest lead of the first half at 37-18. Beatrice made a little run, but Simons got to the basket as time ran out to give Wahoo a 14 point lead.
Simons led the Warriors in scoring with 20, 10 coming in the second period. Christen also reached double figures, scoring 11 off the bench, including three of four from three-point. Vetrosky led Beatrice with 27, but only three other Orangemen scored. COACH BOMAR:
Coming off a hard-fought win on Thursday, we wanted to continue our success. Although Beatrice hasn’t had much success this year in the win column, they have battle closely with several of our common opponents. They have one of the top players in our conference in Harrison Vetrosky, so we wanted to remain focused on the things that have put us in the position we are in now. Vetroksy scored 27 points but we were able to keep in check pretty much everyone else. Outside of Dylan’s 20, we had balanced scoring throughout the lineup. I am really pleased with how unselfish this group has been on the offensive side of the ball and how well we have taken care of it. We have a busy schedule coming up with 3 quality opponents. We are excited for the challenge.
