Season Game #: 15 / Current Record: 12 - 3
WAHOO: 25 ... 22 ... 18 ... 9 .... 74
Nebraska City: 15 ... 7 ... 6 ... 0 .... 28
When a #1 seed in a tournament plays the #8 seed, a lot of things have to go wrong for the #1 seed and a lot of things have to go well for the #8 seed if there’s going to be an upset. Neither of those things happened Tuesday night in the first round of the 2025 Trailblazer Conference Tournament as Wahoo cruised to a 74 – 28 victory over Nebraska City. It looked like a lopsided game coming in with Wahoo sporting an 11 – 3 record while Nebraska City was 2 – 15. Add to the equation that Wahoo had defeated the Pioneers 70 – 23 two weeks earlier and the result is pretty much as expected.
Several plays stood out for the Warriors. With Wahoo leading 38 to 22 midway through the second period, Kaden Christen dribbled the ball up court, found Dylan Simons who made a pinpoint pass to Ethan Raabe for the fast break layup. The third quarter began with Simons making a nice bounce pass to Cody Hesser on the baseline for a dunk. Midway in the second period Landon Glock stole the ball, pushed it ahead to Simons, who got it back to Glock for the easy layup. The Warriors were sharing the ball effectively, recording 17 assists for the game.
If you were looking for defense, the Warriors excelled there also. Although a little sluggish in the first quarter (Coach Bomar commented, “Our defensive energy was a little slow out of the gates tonight.”) the Warriors turned up the intensity and allowed the Pioneers only seven points in the second quarter, six in the third, and zero in the final period. The Warriors forced twenty turnovers and held the Pioneers to 22% shooting.
Nebraska City looked like they might be able to stay close in the first period, but 6 points each from Kip Brigham and Jase Kaminski helped Wahoo to a ten-point lead. In the second quarter, after a Nebraska City three made the score 32-22, Wahoo went on a 15 – 0 run, ending with five points in the last minutes by Simons. Brigham went 3-out-of-4 from the line in the last minute of the third period to make the lead 65 – 28. The starters were benched for the fourth period and it was a running clock the last six minutes. Jade Maly came off the bench to score 7 in the period.
It was a career game for Kip Brigham who scored his season high with 11 points. He led the team in rebounds (6), Assists (4) and steals (3). Hesser (11) also reached double figures and Dylan Simons led the team with 16 points.
The win puts Wahoo in the semi-finals of the tournament for the fifth consecutive year (this is the fifth year for the conference). The Warriors will play Plattsmouth.
