Season Game #: 27 / Current Record: 22 - 5

Wahoo’s hopes for another state championship were snuffed out by Elkhorn North in the first round of the Class B tournament as the Wolves took down the Warriors 74 – 65 at the Pinnacle Bank Arena. One statistic stood out for the Wolves – they connected on 11-of-22 three pointers for the game, many coming at key points.

None of those three’s were any bigger than Jase Reynolds’ at the end of the first half. A seven-point Elkhorn North lead had been cut to three when Reynolds launched a long three as the half time buzzer sounded. The shot banked in and the Wolves claimed a 34-28 lead. That was one of four treys converted by the Wolves in the second quarter. After trailing by one at the end of the first quarter, Elkhorn scored eight unanswered points in the middle of the second quarter which included two three-pointers to take a lead they would not relinquish at 26 – 19.

When the Warriors scored the first five points of the second half, Elkhorn North again responded with two three pointers and two free throws to push the lead to eleven at 42-31. But Wahoo kept fighting back and a Dylan Simons inside bucket and free-throw cut the lead to 55 – 50 at the end of the third period. However, Elkhorn North led off the final period with another three that kept the Wolves comfortable with an eight-point lead. Coach Bomar commented, “It felt every time we put together a mini run, they answered with a big 3.” The Wolves scored two more treys in the quarter and eventually built their biggest lead at 74-62. Ironically the last score of the game came on a Wahoo three as Simons scored from just past mid-court as the buzzer sounded.

The Warriors had little success at the three-point line themselves, finishing 6/23 (26%). Freshman Landon Glock came off the bench in the first period to knock down two three’s that helped Wahoo to a 16-15 first quarter lead. Glock finished the game with 14 points. Another bright spot for the Warriors was Kip Brigham’s stretch of six points in the last minute and a half of the second quarter that kept Wahoo close. Cody Hesser (13), Simons (18) and Jase Kaminski (11) were also in double figures for Wahoo.

The loss marked the seventh time in Wahoo’s 26 trips to the state tournament (since 1948) that the Warriors have lost in the first round. The win put Elkhorn North in the semifinals* in their first trip to the state tournament. Wahoo finished the season with a 22-5 record. Wahoo will return a strong nucleus for the 2025 season as Simons was the lone senior for the Warriors.

*Elkhorn North lost to Scottsbluff in the semifinal game.

Coach Bomar:

I am incredibly proud of our guys this year.  I thought we played relatively well.  Elkhorn North shot so well from behind the arc, that we just couldn’t overcome 11-22.  It felt every time we put together a mini run, they answered with a big 3.  We just were unable to get key stops that at times we could have cut the game to one possession.  On the counter, we really struggled, going 6-23, from three.  We really had to fight to get buckets around the rim with their size, but we needed a few more shots to go our way in order to put some pressure on them.  It was a good experience for our guys and losing only one senior, hopefully the experience helps.  That being said, I was devastated for Dylan.  He had such a great season for us, and I really wanted that State run for him.  He was a special player throughout his career and he will be missed dearly.  But none of this takes away the All State caliber season he put on.
