Season Game #: 20 / Current Record: 17 - 3

Wayne: 18 ... 15 ... 11 ... 4 .... 48
Wahoo travelled to Wayne on Thursday night to face the 18 – 3 and #9 ranked Blue Devils. Coach Bomar called Wayne: “a much different team than we’ve played this year as they pretty much live and die by the 3.” The Blue Devils did not disappoint as they knocked down 11 treys, the most by any Wahoo opponent this season. But it wasn’t enough as the Warriors parlayed a strong effort on defense and on the boards to secure a 64-48 win.
The game was much closer than the final score indicates as Wayne was able to take a half time lead. A Brady Munter three with 4:52 to go in the second period put Wayne up 27 – 25. After a Cody Hesser inside two for Wahoo, Wayne ran off six points. Eli Shada’s basket at 1:28 to go was the final score of the quarter and left Wahoo behind 29 – 33.
Wayne maintained the lead throughout the third period until Hesser tied it up with 2:39 to go, but a Jaxcon Kneifl three for Wayne with 2:18 to go in the quarter gave the Blue Devils a 44 – 41 lead. Wahoo then scored the last six points of the quarter. Landon Glock scored on an assist from Dylan Simons, Shada netted a three, and Kip Brigham went coast to coast for a layup and a foul shot. Wahoo had claimed a 49-44 lead.
The final period was all Wahoo as the Warriors held Wayne to just four points. Wahoo earned the win, outrebounding Wayne 25 – 15. And defensively, Wahoo shut down the Blue Devil’s leading scorer in the second half. Colson Nelson had scored 14 first half points, but Jase Kaminski face-guarded the Blue Devil guard the second half and held him scoreless. Wayne was held to 48 points, seven under their season average. Simons once again led Wahoo in scoring with 19 points while Hesser contributed 12 and Brigham scored 11. The win pushed Wahoo’s record to 17 – 3, with an eleven game win streak.

COACH BOMAR:
Coming into this one, we knew we’d be in for a fight. They have a 1000 point scorer in Colson Nelson and an extremely talented shooter in Jaxson Kneifl. They have also put together 18 wins this far. We had a heck of a time finding the shooters early. They do a very good job using a variety of screens and cuts to get open. We went into the half down 4, although it felt like we were fortunate to only be down 4. In the second half, we settled down a little bit and were able to contain their shooters. We put Jase Kaminski on Nelson and tasked him with not letting him get off another shot. Jase held him scoreless for the second half. Offensively we settled down and worked the ball a little better and were able to get some layups to get the lead and then open it up at the end. This is a much different team than we’ve played this year as they pretty much live and die by the 3. Most teams that do that are pretty inconsistent, however, they have managed 18 wins so far this year with that philosophy. Dylan finished with 19 points and 9 boards while Cody chipped in 12 and 6. Hopefully this helped prepare us for a similar challenge in Gretna East, who we face Saturday.
