Wahoo met up with the Knights of Mount Michael in the first round of the B-5 District Tournament at DC West High School. The game was a rematch from a December contest that Wahoo won convincingly, 75-48. This time it wasn’t much different as Wahoo scored another 27 point win, 70 – 43.

The Knights were able to play Wahoo even in the second half, but Wahoo’s 25-point first half lead kept Mount Michael from making a game of it. The Knights were within two points halfway through the first stanza, but Wahoo rattled off a series of baskets to establish a 19 – 12 lead at the end of the period. Ethan Raabe scored on a drive to the basket, Dylan Simons grabbed an offensive rebound and put it in, Jase Kaminski connected on a three, and Kaminski converted on an assist from Cody Hesser. Wahoo then dominated the second quarter. Kaminski scored the first seven points of the period and the scoreboard showed a 32-13 lead when Landon Glock downed a three at the 2:19 mark.

Mount Michael couldn’t get any closer than eighteen in the second half. The Warrior defense helped keep the Knights at bay, three times (Eli Shada, Hesser, and Kip Brigham) in the third quarter turning steals into easy layups. The Wahoo starters were all on the bench for the last half of the fourth period and Landon Glock connected on one of his four three’s to give the Warriors their biggest lead at 68 – 40.

Three Warriors scored double figures. Kaminski led all scorers with 14, all of which came in the first half. Glock registered 12 points, and Brigham 11. Hesser and Shada were both just shy of the ten point mark with 9 each. The Warriors won the statistical game as well, out-rebounding the Knights 34 – 26 and forcing four more turnovers than Mount Michael. Behind Glock’s 4-out-of-7 shooting, the Warriors won the three-point battle also.

The loss put Mount Michael’s record at 13 – 11. Currently ranked #14 in power points, the Knights still have a chance to qualify for a district final. Wahoo is assured of a spot in the finals with a 20 – 4 record and a #4-point ranking. The Warriors advance to the sub-district final to face Douglas County West, which is 21 – 3 and currently #3 in power points.

COACH BOMAR:

Our goal tonight was to win the rebounding battle.  We felt if we could do that, it meant that we kept Oldenhoeft in check.  We ended up winning the battle of the board by 12 and in turn held Oldenhoeft to 9 points.  We shot well from 3, going 8 -19, including Landon Glock’s 4 - 7.  We’ve battled the turnover bug the last few games, tonight we kept that in check much better, committing 9 turnovers.  I’m very pleased with our guys’ efforts tonight.  We’ll have a tough, quick turnaround in matching up with DC West for the sub-district title.
