Wahoo is returning to the state tournament in Lincoln for the 26th time (since 1948). The Warriors earned their spot in the Class B bracket with a 75-53 win over McCook. By winning the B-5 subdistrict, Wahoo claimed the #3 seed and hosted the Bison who qualified as a wildcard (#14 seed) after losing to Scottsbluff in their subdistrict. It’s Wahoo’s 12th trip to Lincoln in the last 14 years. Ten of those have been Class C1 tournaments. This year Wahoo competes in Class B. The last time the Warriors were in the Class B bracket was in 2020 when they lost to Mount Michael, 76 – 50 in the first round.
Wahoo made it clear from the beginning of the game that they would be tough to beat. After McCook opened the scoring with two free throws, the Warriors went on a 14 - 2 run. Landon Glock connected for one of his three treys for the game at the 1:36 mark to give Wahoo its biggest lead of the quarter at 21 – 9. Dylan Simons scored his eleventh point of the quarter to close the score at 23 – 13.
Glock opened the second quarter with his second three and Wahoo steadily increased the lead. Simons again closed out the quarter, this time on a traditional three-point play, to make the halftime score 40 – 24.
The Warriors left the Bison no hope as the third period began with another Wahoo run. The quarter began with a lob play from Kip Brigham to Cody Hesser and the run ended with a Jase Kaminski steal to Simons on the break to give the Warriors their biggest lead at 50 – 24. The run might have been stopped early, but a McCook three-point basket was nullified by an offensive foul call. Simons scored ten – his third double digit quarter.
While the Bison kept pace with the Warriors in the fourth quarter, they never really threatened Wahoo’s lead. When McCook hit back-to-back three’s to close the lead to eighteen, Ethan Raabe scored on a fast break and Hesser scored two quick baskets, on a drive to the basket followed by a steal and score on the inbounds. The bench was cleared at the 1:37 mark and Jackson Kemerling scored Wahoo’s final points, a three-pointer from the top of the key.
Wahoo implemented a full court press late in the first quarter and the defensive pressure helped significantly as the Warriors recorded 11 steals and forced 19 turnovers for the game. Coach Bomar pointed out that Simons had a “truly special night.” The senior left the Wahoo gym for the last time leading the team in scoring (26), rebounding (11), assists (6), and steals (8). Hesser (18) and Glock (11) joined Simons in double figure scoring.

Coach Bomar:
I know I’ve said this a lot this year, but I am just so incredibly proud of this group of young men. They just show up every night and compete. McCook provided a very unique challenge in that they like to play fast and take quick shots but also have the bigs that are relentless on the glass to provide extra opportunities. Ultimately we just slowly extended the lead through out the first half and delivered that knock out blow early in the 3rd. Our two leaders throughout the season came up big. Cody Hesser scored 18 points and secured 4 rebounds, while Dylan Simons had a truly special night. He scored 26 while also grabbing 11 rebounds and had 8 steals, 6 assists, and 2 blocks. Dylan is putting together a truly special Senior season in Class B. This was the final Varsity basketball game in a gym that has seen so much success over the years. In reflecting, it just seems right that a son of one of the Wahoo greats closed the gym out right while leaving his own mark. We have now punched our ticket to the State Tournament and look forward to competing with the best of Class B.
