Usually career high scoring and clutch free throws will produce a win. But such wasn’t the case for Wahoo on Saturday as the Warriors fell to Lincoln Lutheran in overtime, 69 – 60. The Class C1 #1 Warriors came into the game following a Thursday night loss to Omaha Concordia. Wahoo was on a five-game win streak and ranked #7 in Class B.
Kip Brigham (10 points) and Dylan Simons (27 points) both scored career highs. Brigham did his damage in the second quarter with six points as Wahoo built its largest lead at 12 points. Simons scored at least four points in every quarter and was 14/15 from the line, including a string of six consecutive in the fourth quarter and 4/4 in overtime.
But it wasn’t enough as Lincoln Lutheran captured the lead early in the second half and never relinquished it. The Lincoln Warriors got on top with a 10-0 run the last half of the second quarter and the first four points of the third to take a 28-26 lead. Coach Bomar commented, “. We just couldn’t overcome that 8-minute stretch, from the middle of the 2nd to the middle of the 3rd, of scoring just 2 points.” Lutheran held on to that lead through the third and fourth quarters until there was less than a minute left in regulation. Simons then took over, scoring six points in the last minute. As Lutheran was only able to convert 1-of-4 free throws, Simons drove to the basket with :07 remaining and tied the game at 55.
Overtime belonged to Lincoln Lutheran. The Lincoln Warriors scored the first five points and never looked back, connecting well enough at the free throw line and finishing with a nine-point win.
Wahoo forced 15 Lutheran turnovers and was credited with 10 steals, 4 from Simons. But Wahoo also committed 15 turnovers. The Lincoln defense limited Wahoo to 5-of-19 three-point shooting (26%). It was the first time in nine tries that Lincoln Lutheran has been able to defeat Wahoo.

COACH BOMAR:
Obviously this was a tough one. It’s always tough to battle back in a game like this against a very good team and fight your way into an overtime and then fall short. This Lincoln Lutheran team is incredibly talented and will make a serious run for the C1 title and they did a great job of managing our early run. I thought our defense did a really nice job keeping us in the game during that stretch, we just needed to get some better looks on the offensive end. Lincoln Lutheran did a nice job in getting us to settle for shots and limiting our second chance points. Dylan Simons had an incredible stretch to close out regulation, willing himself to the rim possession after possession to give us a shot to win it in OT, but we just couldn’t sustain that throughout the overtime period. I’m happy with our guys and our effort, we just fell short to a really good team.
