Waverly: 9 ... 11 ... 8 ... 9 .... 37

Those in attendance at the Wahoo gym on Thursday night might have experienced a little déjà vu. There was Mick Anderson, legendary coach of the Warriors. Players named Hancock, Glock, and Simons were pouring in three-point baskets. Warriors were dominating the opponent, stealing the ball and racing down the court, lighting up the scoreboard with a 50 plus win. All of this was reminiscent of the teams Anderson coached in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. But this was 2025. Coach Anderson was on hand to receive the 2024 John Wooden Legacy Award for the state of Nebraska. It wasn’t Mike Hancock, Jason Glock, Ryan Glock, Troy Glock,Mike Simons, Jeff Simons, or Rob Brigham. It was Griffen Hancock, Landon Glock, Kip Brigham, and Dylan Simons. And it was the 2025 Warriors handing a 92 – 37 beating to Waverly. Coach Bomar commented, “it was a great experience for our kids to honor the Legacy of Coach Anderson before our game. They weren’t even alive during Coach Anderson’s run here at Wahoo, but they all understand the tradition he established and the opportunities that have been given by just being a part of that legacy. That may have inspired us tonight.”

The teams Anderson coached in the early 1990’s were arguably ahead of their time in their three point scoring. One didn’t have to look much further than three-point shooting by the Warriors on Thursday night to find a reason for the dominating performance. The team was 14 / 18 from beyond the arc. Four players scored multiple treys. Dylan Simons, who led all scorers with 21 points netted 2/2. Landon Glock (2/2) and Caden Christen (3/4) came off the bench to register their three’s. And reserve player Griffen Hancock connected on 2/2 in the fourth quarter.

It was a game of big runs for the Warriors. The game began with an 11 - 2 run. After Waverly scored the first three points of the second quarter, Wahoo rattled off 15 consecutive points. The third period began with a 15 – 2 start and a Glock three at the 5:16 mark put the game into a running clock. A Jackson Kemerling three gave Wahoo their biggest lead at 92 - 35 before Waverly scored the final basket of the game.

The Warriors dominated in all aspects of the game. The 30 points scored in the second quarter was the highest of the year for the Warriors. And they repeated it in the third quarter. Led by Cody Hesser (6) Wahoo registered 16 steals. The Warriors out rebounded the Vikings 26 – 17, with Eli Shada grabbing 5. The Warriors forced 18 turnovers and dished out 23 assists. Coach Bomar described it as “about as complete of a game as I’ve seen in a long time.”

Part of Coach Anderson’s legacy is a Nebraska record 114 game winning streak. The win pushed the current Warriors’ win streak to five games. Coach Anderson’s teams put six state championship banners up in the Wahoo gym. Perhaps the 2025 Warriors will be “inspired” to put up a banner of their own. The performance Thursday night was a step in that direction.

COACH BOMAR:

We shot 78% from three (14-18) and 70% from two (18-26).  We had 23 assists over our 32 made baskets and forced 18 turnovers.  I really feel like our defense was locked in from the start and continued for the full 32 minutes.  This group is continuing to gel, and things are really coming together for this group.  Now it’s just a matter of staying consistent with this effort as we head into our conference tournament next week.
