Crete: 17 ... 11 ... 12 ... 12 .... 52

Wahoo faced the challenge of a rated opponent on Thursday night when Crete came to town. The Cardinals boasted a 14 – 4 record and a #8 Class B ranking. The game was close all the way, but the Warriors claimed a 61 – 52 victory.

After a Crete lob play put the Cardinals ahead 21-19 at the 5:10 mark in the second period, Kaden Christen scored on an assist from Jase Kaminsky and Eli Shada netted a three-pointer to put Wahoo ahead 23-21. They would never trail the rest of the game. A Shada buzzer beater at the end of the third period gave Wahoo a 47-40 lead, and a Kip Brigham basket followed by a Cody Hesser offensive rebound and putback gave Wahoo its biggest lead at 51-40 early in the final period. A Cardinal three-pointer at the 3:10 mark did pull the visitors to within four but Dylan Simons went 4/4 from the free throw line in the last minute to secure the win.

It was a physical game with Wahoo whistled for 13 fouls while Crete committed 20. The scoring difference was reflected in the free throws. In the first quarter, Wahoo was 6/6 from the line while Crete was 6/8 as Wahoo took a 19-17 lead. Wahoo went 16 / 23 (70%) while Crete was 11 / 20 (55%) for the game. Coach Bomar commented, “I feel we matched their physicality pretty well.”

The Warriors were again led in scoring by Simons with 18. He was joined in double figures by Hesser (10) and Shada (10). Simons also pulled down 14 rebounds. Wahoo’s record is now 15 – 3 with a nine game win streak.

COACH BOMAR:

Our boys battled their tails off tonight.  We knew coming in this was going to be a tough matchup. Crete posed a particular challenge in that they have so much size with Gardiner and Oglsby while pairing that with some pretty talented shooters, particularly Rezny who is one of the best shooters in the state.  We wanted to make every possession tough on them.  I thought the job Jase did guarding Rezny sparked our entire defensive effort tonight.  Kip is really showing the athleticism and instincts on the basketball court as he showed on the football field all fall.  Cody got in some early foul trouble but he sparked us in the second half with some big shots.  Dylan filled up the stat sheet again.  Eli Shada come up huge for us.  He was battling all night making it tough to score on the inside while also hitting some huge buckets for us, including a buzzer beater at the end of the 3rd quarter from the volleyball line.  Our bench was fantastic as well.  We struggled scoring in the first half, but Ethan and Landon were able to knock down some free throws for us while Kaden hit a 3 and scored on a back door cut.  All 8 guys contributed to this win.  Who knows we might get matched up again with Crete somewhere down the stretch here.
