Wahoo vs Crete

Following their loss to Ashland in the championship game of the Trailblazer Conference Tournament, Wahoo was seeking to get back on the winning track against Crete, a non-conference foe on the road. It wasn’t easy, as the 13-6 Cardinals hung with the Warriors for one and a half quarters. But with Crete leading 20-19 halfway through the second quarter, the Warriors put on a 14 – 0 run that was the difference in the game. Leading 30 – 19 at the half, the Warriors never let Crete get close and registered a 63 – 42 victory.

At the start of the second period, it appeared that Crete’s Oliver Oglesby might be too much for the Warrior defense to handle. The 6’8” senior scored on two lob plays to tie the game at 12. A Jase Kaminski traditional three-point play and a Joey Kelly transition score gave Wahoo a lead at 19-15. But then an Alex Mora jump shot and a Mora three put Crete ahead 20-19. Kip Brigham ignited the decisive Wahoo run with a coast to coast layup with 3:05 to go, added a traditional three-point play with 1:25 to go and scored the final points of the half on a drive to the basket – Brigham scored seven of the fourteen-point run.

Wahoo’s top scorer, Cody Hesser, had been held scoreless in the first quarter, but he got going the rest of the game, netting 6 points each in the remaining three periods to lead the team with 18 points. Hesser also contributed 9 rebounds, 4 offensive, 3 of which he converted to putback points. Wahoo outrebounded Crete 28 – 20. Landon Glock converted his third three of the game to finish the scoring – Glock was 3 of 4 from the three-point line and totaled 13 for the game. Brigham was also in double figures with 13 and Jase Kaminski with 10. Mora (11) and Oglesby (10) were in double figures for the Cardinals. The win put Wahoo’s season mark at 15 – 4.
