Wahoo vs Wayne

Wahoo suffered their first loss of the season on Tuesday night, mainly due to a pressure Norris defense that forced the Warriors into 21 turnovers. On Friday night Wahoo applied some pressure of their own to earn a dominating 71-37 win over the visiting Wayne Blue Devils.

The Warriors extended their defense into the back court in the second quarter and the impact was dramatic. Wahoo forced 10 turnovers in the period and limited Wayne to just one point, a free throw with 3:36 to go in the half. The Warriors scored 17 points in the period, 5 from Griffin Hancock coming off the bench, including a trey at the halftime buzzer.

The Warriors made it clear they weren’t going to let Wayne back in the game as they opened the third period with a Cody Hesser dunk on a lob from Jase Kaminski. Midway in the quarter Kip Brigham netted consecutive three-pointers and Wahoo pushed the lead to 40-15.

Early in the game it appeared that Wayne would be able to stay in the game with the Warriors. After Jase Kaminski opened the game with a three off an out-of-bounds play, Wayne’s Brody Munter and Jaxon Kneifl connected on back to back three’s and Wayne held a one-point lead, 10-9, at the end of one. Coach O’Connor called his team “a little sluggish” at the start.

Halfway through the final stanza, Coach O’Connor put in the reserves who managed to build on Wahoo’s lead. Quincy Gigstad scored six points in the quarter while Hancock added another 5. Overall the Warrior bench scored 24 points. Coach O’Connor commented, “It was a good game to get some of our younger guys a little bit of experience and minutes and I think some of them responded very well.”

Hesser led the Warriors with 13 points, while Hancock (12) and Landon Glock (11) joined him in double figures. Glock continued to lead the Warrior three-point attack, going 3 of 4 for the game. As a team the Warriors shot 8 of 20 (40%) from beyond the arc. The Wahoo defense held the Blue Devils to 25% shooting and forced a total of 21 turnovers.

Wayne’s first two games had been close, a 36-33 win over Battle Creek and a 58-59 loss to Wakefield. Wahoo’s record improved to 3 – 1.
